Enforced by the 2021 Environment Act, it will be compulsory from November 2023 for all housing and infrastructure developments in England to deliver a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), preserved for a minimum period of 30 years. BNG is a method of development and/or land management that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than before. This can be achieved through the creation or enhancement of habitat, which can be delivered on-site, off-site or via statutory biodiversity credits.
Biodiversity gains and losses are measured using an approved biodiversity metric, taking into consideration a habitat’s size, distinctiveness, condition and strategic significance resulting in “biodiversity units”. These units can be sold by landowners and purchased by developers as a way of meeting BNG requirements off-site.
Meller Speakman have biodiversity units available for developers to purchase and can advise, promote and secure the successful sale of biodiversity units for landowners. See our attached prospectuses for various sites where BNG units are available to purchase.
